Vandor: On A Moonlit Night

The beginnings of Swedish power metal outfit Vandor began in the early 2010s as the band changed their name a few times before deciding on Vandor around 2015. In 2019, Vandor released their debut album titled In the Land of Vandor and last year released their sophomore effort On A Moonlit Night, the subject of this review.

The short instrumental “Darkness Looms� moves almost immediately into “Mountains of Avagale�, a speedy power metal offering with a beginning of delicious keyboards and acoustic guitar. Although the playing is fast, all the instruments are clear in the mix with the bass and vocals really standing out. This is heavy music at its catchiest. The vocal melodies and rumbling bass in “River of Life� and the seventeen minute epic “The Sword to End All Wars� with its melodic vocals, marching drum grooves, sweet orchestrations and high drama make for some excellent moments.

Although power metal is a genre I am not overly familiar with, On A Moonlit Night makes me want to dig further as this fell almost immediately into my wheelhouse. Recommended.
