Sentance, Carl: Electric Eye

Whilst not exactly a household name, British vocalist Carl Sentance has been a mainstay on the hard rock scene for a number of decades, with his CV including stints in Persian Risk, Krokus and, most recently, Nazareth, amongst others. This, his fourth solo release, is, despite the album name and that of the first track, not some kind of Priest tribute but rather a solid hard rock record that is heavy on the anthems in the first half - opener “Judas” is a bit reminiscent of Gary Moore and Phil Lynott’s “Out In The Fields”; “Alright” has a slightly more modern rock feel while the up-tempo “Overload” is a more traditional, eighties-style heavy metal track. The mood then changes with “Nervous Breakdown” exhibiting a slightly funky, soulful vibe reminiscent of latter-period Red Hot Chili Peppers; “Exile” is a mid-tempo number with a dark, almost gothic tone, whilst the closing “California Queen” has an almost pop-punk feel in places.

There are a couple of definite fillers here (such as the repetitive “If This Is Heaven”) and what Sentance might argue is variety amongst the numbers presented here could also mean it’s hard to pigeon hole the audience he’s aiming this record at. In addition, the presence of Deep Purple keyboard maestro Don Airey is trailed in the promo material but you’d be hard pressed to know it was him purely from the music alone, whereas his style is usually quite recognisable. Overall I’d say this was quite an enjoyable listen although a lack of real stand-out songs will probably mean it doesn’t get that many future plays from me.
