Various Artists: Fanfare For The Uncommon Man-The Official Keith Emerson Tribute Concert

I remember the day I heard of Keith Emerson’s passing, another prog giant gone, it was a truly sad day. I spent a lot of time going through the bands catalogue, reminiscing of the various times I had seen them live over the years, and enjoying Mr. Emerson’s gift to us, his talent and music.

I am not often a fan of tribute albums, but this one is very well done, and packed with music, pictures, and a concert DVD that really captures the spirit of the music. The concert occurred on May 28th, 2016, and brought together a number of top notch players to pay tribute to this titan of progressive rock. Just check out this list of musicians: Steve Lukather, Gregg Bissonette, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Steve Pocaro, Jordan Rudess, and Rachel Flowers just to name a few. But a tip of the cap must be made to Keith’s bandmate Marc Bonilla. Marc is a stellar guitarist & vocalist who helped lead the Keith Emerson band over, a great player and stellar vocalist who really captures and conveys the spirit of the music. Fans of ELP don’t need a lengthy dissertation as these songs are well known to them, but what is surprising is how well everything works, the musicians do a fantastic job, and who knows how much rehearsal time they had together. So, not much else needs to be said, this was really enjoyable to watch these musicians perform these classic songs, and just as impressive to hear others play these incredible pieces of music.

The packaging and artwork are top notch; you get two CDs of the concert audio, a DVD of the show, and a second DVD that contains artist interviews, behind-the scenes footage, tribute speeches, and rare photos that were provided by the Emerson estate. In additions, all proceeds will benefit the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, a charity that focuses on treating and finding a cure for dystonia, a debilitating neurological ailment that Mr. Emerson was battling.

Various Artists: Fanfare For The Uncommon Man-The Official Keith Emerson Tribute Concert

My Score:

Well, we know Iommi is workin on a Martin era box. But as for reuniting with him? No-one outside of the UK went to see them live as Sabbath, I do not see what is in it for Iommi now. This is not a Dio situation - Martin would not be sellin out Radio City Music hall. Sad truth is he was hired because he could do Ozzy and Dio stuff and copy their styles. Yet he never found his own style - even wrote like Ronnie - and had zero prescence up on stage. Audiences never connected with him and multiple US tours were cancelled due to low - very low - ticket sales.

I like Thorns, there is some solid melodic rock on it but Tony is just same as ever - solid, wont let you down but will never blow you away either. Tellin that his most popular Sabbath record was recorded by someone else and he just was dubbed on, Eternal Idol. Ditto with the tracks the band kept from the potential follow up to Dehumaniser. Tony on his own? Tyr was his best lyric work and Norse myth is hardly a jump from Dio and his dragons and knights.

Iommi will put the box out for a quick buck since Ozzy is past it, Glenn would never do Sabbath and Ian is killin it with Purple. Martin is his only card left to play without startin over, which I think he should. I would love to see a new Iommi band - or even a new BS vocalist with Butler and Appice back. But Tony Martin? So they can fail to sell tickets all over?

The "box" is just to make the albums come back into print and cash in a bit. Iommi is so lazy. Spent a decade doin nothing. Time is not on his side. Maybe he should join Priest!
