Sandy McKnight w/ Fernando Perdomo: San Fernando Blast!

This is a two man band, with Sandy McKnight handling vocals, bass, and keys, and Fernando Perdomo tackling drums, guitars and keys. McKnight wrote every track and produced the disc himself. After the first two tracks, you know you are in for some fun power pop, and with no track reaching 4 minutes, these songs hit quick, and are over in a flash. “Heart In Your Hands� immediately rings out of heavy Beatles influence. Layered guitars add a nice melody, and the songs are well constructed. Fans of that particular era of pop, (think The Beatles and The Byrd’s) will find much to enjoy in the music. The 12 string guitar solo in “Any Time of Day� stands out as one of my favorite moments. Most of these tracks will catch your ear with catchy melodies, and those clichés that will sound familiar to you.

Ultimately, it comes down to how you feel about McKnight’s lead vocals. The layered backing vocals are well done, but the lead vocals are weak, my best comparison is a combination of Elvis Costello and Tom Petty in tone. McKnight has the songwriting chops, he seems to easily conjure good melodies and hooks, but a strong lead vocalist is needed, and would have elevated this disc.
