If you ever wondered how Air Supply, Molly Hatchet and Judy Collins would sound on one album, have we got a treat for you!
Legends Play The Beatles is another tribute album from Cleopatra Records. In addition to the aforementioned three artists (which, by the way, cover “The Long and Winding Road,” “Back in the USSR” and “Yesterday,” respectively), there’s Ann Wilson (“Across the Universe”), John Wetton (“Penny Lane”), Howard Jones (“And I Love Her”), Steve Morse and Richard Page (“Here Comes the Sun”) and five others.
Each artist puts their own expected (and sometimes unexpected) spin on these classics, and all of these versions have appeared on previous tribute comps -- at least five, by my count. But this collection brings all of the tracks together into ... another comp. Not sure how many more Beatles tributes we need; nothing was wrong the originals. (Of course, the Beatles are back in the news again with the release of Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back documentary, so we get this collection as sort of an ancillary product.)
The CD is over in fewer than 40 minutes, which is good news or bad news -- depending on how you like what you’ve just heard.
