Burntfield: Impermanence
A Netherlands-based band with a Finnish vocalist, Burntfield wear their influences on their sleeves on this, their second album. The promo mentions ‘for fans of Anathema, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and The Pineapple Thief’ - add latter-day iterations of Katatonia and Marillion and you have a fair idea of the sound. Things start on a melancholic note with “Empty Dream”, some guitar heft giving an otherwise rather sleepy opener some life, before both “Back Again” (a catchy, up-tempo song with a busy bassline and heavy guitars on the chorus) and “Trust In You” (which even blends in a bit of seventies funk in to the mix) bring a bit of life back to proceedings. Sadly the rather cloying ballad “Something Real” brings the tempo and excitement levels back down and they stay pretty subdued up to the end. The title track, at nearly 9 minutes, might have prog fans pricking up their ears, but it is a fairly innocuous, rather ambient instrumental which brings in some earlier themes but doesn’t really go anywhere.
This album is well played, performed and produced, but there just wasn’t enough here that really grabbed me- and at only 36 minutes, I feel a band should have enough ideas to keep the listeners attention. Fans of the aforementioned bands might want to give this a try and it may be more to their liking than mine, but I can’t see myself returning to this in the future.
