Teigen, Ole: Aske og Jord

You never know what you are going to get from Norway these days as the music coming out of that country holds many surprises. This time Apollon Records brings you Ole Teigen and his new album Aske og Jord. The multi-instrumentalist is a member of the doom/psych band Superlynx and has been involved with the bands Dødheimsgard, Skitiiv and Den Saakaldte. Teigen and the bands listed are completely new to me, so I had no idea what to expect. First off, this is not a progressive rock album as it lands more in the realm of neo classical and is very dark and moody. The playing is very good with the musicians crafting huge swaths of atmosphere, especially from piano and viola, the main instruments on display. Melancholic melodies and slow tempos will take time to percolate, the atmosphere can get a little brooding which I am sure was the musician’s intent. For me, Aske og Jord is not something I would play any time of the day. Late night listening is preferable, perhaps during the winter months, to fully enhance the somber atmospheres.
