Age of Aquarius: …Out There…

The male-female duo Age of Aquarius delivers accessible progressive rock arrangements with rock and pop sensibilities on …Out There…, the group’s second album. Featuring Dutch multi-instrumentalist Peter Cox and U.S.-based vocalist Nakoma Z, Age of Aquarius sounds like the Alan Parsons Project (especially when Cox takes over on vocals for “Non Carbon Life Form”) fronted by, say, Natalie Merchant (give “The Men In Black” a listen). They both contribute vocals to “Mysterious Light Being,” a mid-paced rocker propelled by a persistent organ that is representative of this duo’s distinct sound.

Nakoma Z’s refreshingly earthy voice keeps these songs grounded -- even when the lyrics stray into sci-fi and astrological territory. Cox excels at crafting bouncy melodies amplified by crisp piano and keyboards, soaring guitar solos and the good sense to keep the running time of nine of these 10 songs under six minutes each.

Given the subject matter of …Out There… and its eclectic sound, Age of Aquarius won’t appeal to everyone. But if you’re in an adventurous (but not too adventurous) mood, give this a spin.
