Tremonti: Marching In Time

Now five albums into their career, Tremonti, the solo band from Alter Bridge/ex-Creed lead guitarist Mark Tremonti, have amassed a very strong set of melodic metal/hard rock albums that aren't that far off from what the leader does with his main band Alter Bridge. With Tremonti, the guitarist also handles all the lead vocals (and he's an excellent singer), alongside fellow guitarist Eric Friedman, drummer Ryan Bennett, and bass player Tanner Keegan. Marching In Time was produced once again by Michael "Elvis" Baskette, who has worked with the band on their last four albums, and contains a dozen new songs in Tremonti's trademark melodic yet hard hitting style.

Though originally intended as a vehicle to explore heavier territory, it's amazing how similar both Tremonti and Alter Bridge now sound; each band display a tendency for huge, metallic guitar riffing but also featuring anthemic hooks and tons of instantly memorable melodies. Were it not for the difference in Mark's vocals compared to Myles Kennedy, you'd be easily forgiven if you thought the highly engaging "Let There Be Us", "The Last One of Us", or the memorable "A World Away" were new Alter Bridge songs. It's when this band dives into frenetic, near melodic thrash territory, as on the excellent "A World Away" or the crushing "Thrown Further", that things really take a turn for the dramatic, Tremonti showing all the balls of a well honed heavy metal machine with a non-stop assault of face melting riffs, solos, and hooks. "In One Piece" is another example of pummeling down-tuned mayhem, while "Under the Sun" is as soaring & uplifting as a hard rock song can get. Then you have the near 8-minute title track which closes out the album, chock full of massive riffs, atmosphere, blazing solos, and emotional vocals...stunning.

Marching in Time is another example of just how good modern hard rock/metal can be in the hands of Mark Tremonti. No doubt a new Alter Bridge album won't be far off, and we are lucky to have this guy delivering the goods through two top notch bands.
