Quietly becoming one of the best bands on the hard rock/heavy metal scene, German/Swedish outfit Lucifer are back with their fourth studio album, Lucifer IV (there's something to be said for keeping it simple, right?), another example of how to record catchy, accessible rock songs dripping with doom menace and occult mysticism. Led as always by the enchanting vocals of Johanna Platow Andersson, the band are rounded out by Nicke Andersson Platow (Entombed/The Hellacopters) on drums, percussion, backing vocals, guitar, and keys, Linus Bjorkland on guitars and backing vocals, Martin Nordin on guitars and backing vocals, and Harald Gothblad on bass, keyboards, and backing vocals.
Lucifer IV is packed with instantly memorable fare, such as the hook laden "Crucifix (I Burn for You)", the rampaging doom crunchers "Archangel of Death" and "Wild Hearses", the fun psych/doom of "Bring Me His Head" (which has a playful Blue Oyster Cult feel to it), the haunting stomp of "Mausoleum", the memorable occult rock of "Cold as a Tombstone" (with some nice Hammond organ and tasty guitar solos), and the dreamy "Nightmare". Johanna's vocals are just tremendous throughout, but she's especially dazzling on the crushing psych drenched doom of "Orion" and the massive heavy rocker "Phobos", the two gems that close out the album. Just an amazing performance from a talented singer.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, don't let the name Lucifer steer you away from listening to this great band. There aren't many other bands making hard rock music like Lucifer today...don't miss out!
