Doro-Warlock: Triumph & Agony Live
Doro followed the now-common formula of playing a classic album in full for this live rendition of her band Warlock’s 1987 album Triumph & Agony, when she performed it at the 2017 Sweden Rock Festival, of which this new release is a faithful recapturing. As I remember at the time Triumph & Agony was seen as a move to more commercial waters by the band compared to their earlier releases, but time has been kind and it is now widely seen as Warlock’s (and Doro’s) peak.
The album has been re-arranged from the original track-listing, probably quite sensibly, so that the anthemic "All We Are" moves from opening to closing the set, whilst original closer, the powerful ballad "Für Immer", makes a good mid-set focal point. Doro and band sound energized, with plenty of the usual crowd interaction and exhortations to raise hands, sing-along and make more noise " thankfully not so much that it becomes too wearisome although possibly limiting the amount of repeat plays. The band’s playing is on-point throughout, with the quality guitar work particularly noteworthy, and whilst Doro’s voice occasionally sounds a bit hoarse and strained, that does add to the feel that you’re getting the real live experience rather than some sanitized, studio-polished version. Moreover, the original had a rather sleek, overproduced, very ‘eighties’ sound so this rawer version lets the songs breathe a little more.
Overall, whilst even for die-hards it would be hard to call this a must-have (given there is already plenty of Doro live product out there), it’s definitely enjoyable and shows these songs still stand up thirty-odd years later and that Doro remains a strong proposition in the live arena.
