Appalooza: The Holy Of Holies

Appalooza is a doom/stoner metal band hailing from Brittany, France. They formed in 2012 and released their self titled debut album in 2018. The band is back with their latest release titled The Holy Of Holies and what an excellent album it is. The musicians behind this powerful piece of music are:

Sylvain Morel (guitar, vocals)
Vincent Kermagoret (drums)
Tony Kerdoncuff (bass)
The Horse (backing vocals, percussion, e-bow)

The disc begins with the hard hitting “Storm�, a fine heavy stoner rock tune with catchy vocals and powerful rhythms. I really dig the vocals, sort of a dead pan delivery that is easy to listen to. The occasional harsher vox serve to add to the intensity. Towards the end the music turns quiet with mellower atmospheres and an East Indian mysticism. Really cool stuff. On “Snake Charmer� the riffs and drums explode out of the gate before a calming Middle Eastern tinged break. Distorted riffs and a wild guitar solo highlight the sinister sounding “Reincarnation� while “Nazareth� possesses my favourite riff progression on the disc, emitting a cool Eastern vibe. Huge jackhammer distortion can be heard on the heavy “Conquest�, another intense track with great lead vocals, both clean and slightly guttural. This is heavy stuff all around but with enough hooks to hold you in rapt attention.

The Holy Of Holies is another heavy highlight from 2021. Highly recommended.
