Alwanzatar: Den Glemte Dalen

Alwanzatar is the project of Tusmørke band member Krizla (Kristoffer Momrak), a member of the burgeoning progressive rock scene in Norway. While Tusmørke is more in a folk prog vein, Alwanzatar is more electronic prog and more spacey in general. As Alwanzatar, Krinzla has five full length studio efforts including his latest titled Den Glemte Dalen (The Forgotten Valley), released in April, 2021. This is my second review of the band, the first delving into his 2018 release Fangarmer Gjennom Tid Og Rom.

Almost all the instruments are played by Krizla, except for guitar on a couple tracks by Wepwawet. Krizla plays a variety of synths, electronics and flutes.

The songs/soundscape are typically pretty mellow and subdued and the level of trrippiness is way out there. The computerized beats and abundance of effects and synths make this a mandatory listen for fans of weird and spaced-out music. Describing these songs is difficult as this is an album you just need to listen to in a quiet setting, preferably with a good set of headphones. The use of layering and slow builds is noteworthy. This is not an album that will get you with a hook, it is one that takes time to settle out and with an open mind you just might find something here to enjoy. While not for everyone I do recommend fans of electronic music give this one some attention.

An Apollon Records release.
