Pray U Prey: The Omega Kill

You can find several paintings that capture the beauty of workers sowing seeds and looking forward to a bountiful harvest. But that’s not what you’ll see on the cover art of this album. Instead of a human sower, you’ve got an undead figure and instead of seeds, you’ve got symbols of different kinds of currency. It’s a cool cover for a great album. Check it out.

This is Pray U Prey’s second full-length release, and it hits just as hard as their killer debut. The band features members of bands like Suicide Watch, Alehammer, Prophecy of Doom, and others. When the band formed in 2014, the idea was to create music that was even more brutal and intense than any other band in the UK. The music seamlessly blends crust punk and death metal in ways that are just as brutal and intense as the band intended. And nothing is wasted. The songs are tight, straightforward, and brutal. Many of them draw on clips from various movies that comment on leadership, religion, power, and fear. They’re interesting, but the biggest reason to listen to this album is for the sheer force of the band’s sound.

If I was going to recommend the tracks with the best riffs, I’d say just start at the beginning and work your way to the end. Not only is this album heavy on riffs, it also gives the guitars an extra layer of crunch and heft that I found very exciting. To my ears, the tracks that took the most advantage of that sound were “Active Suppression,” “The Omega Kill,” “The Overlay Cracks,” and “Earth Roulette Wheel,” but I could mention others. Of all the tracks, I liked “Active Suppression” the best because it surprised me the most. Pray U Prey likes to play fast, but on “Active Suppression,” they slow things down in ways that never lose an ounce of force.

If you like it fast and heavy, this is it.
