Kryptograf: Kryptograf

Norway is at it again, producing another great band. This time it’s the heavy four piece known as Kryptograf and their self titled debut album released in 2020 on Apollon Records. Let me just say this band is pretty fricking awesome.

The band owe as much to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s as it does to present day as their sound is firmly rooted in the past, and I for one have no problem with that. This is guitar centric music that is both heavy and catchy, with huge riffs, powerful drumming and great lead vocals. That being said, when the synths are used it is with great effect, adding another dimension to the sound The band mostly explores the doom metal genre, with further explorations into heavy psychedelic sounds.

The fuzz comes heavy and hard with the album opening “The Veil”, a great trip into doom metal darkness. The gritty guitar solo rips with face melting intensity. “Omen” is another doomy affair with Sabbath-like guitar riffs and razor-edged string bending in the background. It’s a very cool effect. A mellower interlude leads with a droning creepiness before the doom returns with some furious guitar pyrotechnics. That's just a snippet of the great music you will find on this platter.

Kryptograf has made a fine debut album with killer riffs, memorable melodies and outstanding lead vocals. For fans of heavy music this is not to be missed.
