Ghost Echo: Isolated Dreams

Here is another new find I have just come across. The band is Ghost Echo, hailing from the Netherlands and having formed in 2020. It’s a duo consisting of Remy de Wal (guitars, synths, electric piano, bass, programming, backing vocals) and Karel Witte (vocals, synths, guitars, programming, electric piano). Their new album titled Isolated Dreams came out in March of this year.

The duo play synth pop/trip hop, and although those words may not appeal to some of our readers, there is plenty of substance here to wrap your head around. At times I was reminded of bands like Depeche Mode and Visage and often the music is quite edgy. This is not your typical pop music, no, it is much more challenging and at times quite dark. The soundscapes are laden with synth, keyboards, programmed beats and atmospheric textures, including some excellent guitar work. The opening track “Black Era” is awash with synths and melodic lead vocals. Indeed, the vocals are excellent throughout the disc. The music traverses between lighter pop sheen and heavier guitar riffs. The guitar solo is quite impressive. “Dust” features a haunting soundscape of synths and guitar whereas the album’s first single “Late Night” pulsates with deep bass and textural synthesizer recalling Depeche Mode at their moodiest. The dark and edgy “Null Void” is both eerie and trippy and is another album highlight.

Ghost Echo is not your average pop band. There is substance and detail here, enough to satisfy this prog fan. Recommended.
