Disen Gage: The Big Adventure

One of the better bands from Russia I have heard these past few years has to be the eclectic instrumental outfit Disen Gage. The band formed in 2011 and have seven releases to their credit including their latest titled The Big Adventure, released in 2019. I believe this is my fifth review of the band and every album I have heard is a worthwhile listen. This last effort is no different in that regard.

This is a clever band, right down to the artwork depicting ancient cave paintings within a picture frame. Over the artwork are the scrawled words ‘Disen Gage Was Here’. Pretty witty if you aske me.

Musically, the band is as quirky and eclectic as ever, delving into a number of genres like fusion, avant-garde, progressive rock and jazz. It’s both a bit whacky and fun, with strong musicianship throughout. The album begins with the moody atmospheres of “Shiroyama”, as minor guitars chords wind through a dystopian musical landscape. “Adventurers” features crunchier riffs and a sliding drum beat. Use of accordion adds an eclectic flavour as the music morphs from fusion to jazz, to heavy prog rock. The guitar and harmonica is certainly integral to the tune’s playfulness. The aptly titled “Chaos Point” lives up to its name as the band really amps up the weirdness as a chunky guitar riff leads into a soundscape adorned with trumpet, jazzy piano, rich cello, and various twists and turns. Maybe the best track here. “Enough” starts all trippy and atmospheric before multiple clean guitar lines offer another stunning moment.

The Big Adventure is another excellent offering from a band that really should be wider known. One of the more creative modern bands I have come across. Recommended.

An Addicted Label release.
