Living in Shadows: Living in Shadows

A new project from jazz vocalist Zoe Gilby and multi-instrumentalist Andy Champion; what we have here in Living in Shadows is an act that's perfect for rainy nights on neon lit streets and a cocktail or two. On what is their self-titled debut album, the duo delivers what is largely a jazz album, but with some influences and song structures that are more akin to avant-garde indie pop. It's charming, but mostly mood music that works well in specific settings.

These two certainly have chops for days. Gilby's voice is as smooth and silk and she deftly navigates her way around the relaxed soundscape that Champion provides with nimble fingers. There's some piano and saxophone runs to satisfy anyone who values the art of noodling, but for the most part these songs are restrained and don't fall prey to the act of showoffery. That gives Living in Shadows a certain degree of listenability that's certainly a nice change from the dime-a-dozen note salad jazz acts that usually are representative of this genre. There's some particularly excellent string work on a few tracks that were an unexpected highlight, as well.

While the tracks on Living in Shadows are much more digestible than the average jazz, these aren't exactly toe tappers either. Memorability isn't high on the list of priorities here (nor do I think the artists wished it to be), so it kind of sits in a bit of a grey area that's hard to categorize. It's certainly never offensive (and often quite engaging), but I do wish there was a bit more to the songs on here, whether it be a standout solo performance or a hook of any kind to keep me coming back. There's not a lot to excite you on here, but I suppose a music with a vibe like this is trying to achieve the exact opposite of that must of the time.

Living in Shadows is an enjoyable if largely unremarkable listen. An impeccably performed jazz-lite album with chill vibes for days, this is something to wind down to after a long day, and to get conversations going at an oyster bar during happy hour. Not exactly my sweet spot, but it certainly has it's place. If you are a fan of jazz and don't mind a little bit of dreamscape alt-pop to boot, you should give it a listen.
