Dead Man’s Whiskey: Breakout

Hailing from London, Dead Man’s Whiskey announced their arrival with the rather splendid Under The Gun debut album during 2019. As we all know, the world turned to shit in between then and now, but unperturbed, this UK five-piece have ploughed ahead and now look to make their Breakout!

What I really love about this band is the way they blur the classic rock lines. Would they love to have lived through the genre’s 70s heydays? You betcha! But then, there’s no doubt that they’ve soaked in the Sunset Strip scene and the high life it seemed to offer. The 90s aren’t completely ignored but thankfully we’re not shoe gazing, instead, the title track sounds like AC/DC jamming with Alter Bridge and asking Sammy Hagar to take on the vocals! With John Mitchell (a stunning musician who has worked behind the desk with the likes of Alter Bridge, Inglorious and Enter Shikari) at the production helm, the sound is stellar. And it’s an aspect taken full advantage of as “Sleep When I’m Dead” lifts the lid on mental health issues through a Southern tinged blast of melodic hard rock, whereas “Never Ever” possesses an authority that you simply can’t ignore.

Add in “I Am Here”, which maybe even hosts a hint of Ratt in there somewhere and a piano version of the band’s already well loved “Make You Proud” (this heart wrenching version might be even better) and for a short little release, this really has it all covered.

An EP that distills the excellent classic hard rock that this band has at its disposal and pours it out into five shot sized slugs for our delectation, Breakout hopefully should help this band do exactly what its name implies!
