CAB: CAB

CAB comes out firing on all cylinders, and keep things rocking throughout. The debut from Jazz Fusion outfit CAB consists of Tony MacAlpine (guitar/keyboards), Bunny Brunel (bass), and Dennis Chambers (drums). I was instantly hooked by their incredible musicianship and great songs. Talk about a power trio, they grab you by the throat and never let go. The music connects immediately, it is extremely tuneful, and there is always a phrase or melody you can hang your hat on. “Night Splash� opens the disc up with its bouncy Zappa like quality; effortless musicianship is on display. MacAlpine smokes on this track, playing that I can’t comprehend, as my hands are not capable of the speed and precision. After such an amazing song, what else is left in the tank? Let me answer that with one word…plenty! The title track features more blazing guitar, and a solid groove. Brunel often matches MacAlpine note for note, and gets to have a few excursions of his own. Things get funky on “Just Perfect� and “Atamanashi�. Let’s not forget that MacAlpine also plays keyboards, and dazzles on that instrument, so much talent in those fingers. “The Watcher� is lively, light, and loose, but contains plenty of great soloing over the top. Prepare to be blown away while listening to “Boogie Me� which rips and roars as Chambers sets a powerful pace, and all three have amazing solo spots. If you need or care about my stamp of approval, this is my first CAB album, and I plan to get them after all based on this marvelous debut.
