Book of Numbers: Magick

With a background in Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne tribute bands, the direction US trio Book of Numbers debut album goes in is perhaps not surprising. With their label describing them as a ‘power doom metal’ band, I’d say ‘traditional heavy metal’ covers it more accurately for the most part. The title track kicks things off with decent riffs and good momentum, with a fair bit of a Saxon influence, including Kevin Schumacher’s vocals. It perhaps lacks a strong chorus, which highlights an issue with the album overall in that many songs have good sections but don’t always connect together in seamless fashion; the whole is perhaps less than the sum of it’s parts. The tracks that work best are perhaps the final two, where the ‘doom’ moniker fits a little better, slower chug-fests which bring Candlemass to mind, and have a more cohesive feel.

For a relatively short album, having two throwaway tracks- a completely unnecessary cover of “Children Of The Sea”, and the weak ballad “White Turns Black To Grey”, takes the gloss over what is a promising debut overall, and I confidently expect better things if and when a follow-up comes along.
