Egan, Walter: Fascination

All you classic rockers will remember Walter Egan’s massive hit Magnet and Steel which still gets played today. Egan’s latest release Fascination is apparently inspired by famous groupie Pamela Des Barres, with the first single “Miss Pamela” leaving no doubt. The music is a mix of singer/songwriter, Americana, with touches of country rock, and even reaches back to some 50’s like rockers. Egan’s vocals often remind me of Tom Petty (“A Fool In Love”), and he plays all the instruments on the album except the drums (Rob Krasinski). A nice 12 string jangle runs through “Woo To Woe” which seems to indicate that Egan may have failed to woo Miss Des Barres. “Fading Love” ups the country quotient, and is basically a crying in your beer song, but the music is lively and fun, opposite of the lyrical content. The songs are melodic and very catchy. It was difficult to determine the level of Egan’s relationship with Des Barres, but my assumption would be there was a Fascination or Infatuation on the part of Egan. When the muse hits, one must follow, and Egan was inspired to put his feelings to music, and the listener gets a 13 song love story.
