Crommie, Daniel: Noisemaker

The ever prolific Daniel Crommie, over the years I have reviewed many of his albums and projects, is back in my CD player with his album titled Noisemaker, released in 2020. Crommie has been consistently releasing albums every year sine, well, I don’t know when. The point is his creativity and musical musings cannot be stopped. His ambient approach to soundscapes can be compared to Brian Eno, although I find Crommie’s albums to be more organic in nature.

On the album Crommie plays everything himself including concert and wood flutes, analog and digital synthesizers, sequences, electric dulcimer, samples, fortune cookies, robo-call manipulations, percussion, and rhythmic devices. He also acted as producer and engineer. Certainly a man of many talents.

The album contains eleven tracks, most with a steady rhythmic groove, a generous helping of synthesizers and sound treatments and a copious amount of flute. It isn’t so much as catchy as it is hypnotic, as all the elements when taken as a whole create a transfixing listen. Whether it’s the percussion and flute backbone of “Waiting Out the Rain”, the bubbly synthesizer and wild dulcimer in the moody “Jigsaw Jargon”, or the razor-like bursts of sound in the intriguing “Baby Potatoes”, the album should provide plenty of interesting moments for those into a more experimental, world sound.

Crommie is a supreme talent and I urge everyone to check him out.
