RPWL: God Has Failed-Live & Personal

2020 was going to be a big year for RPWL, as it marked the 20th anniversary of their debut album God Has Failed. Then Covid struck, tours were cancelled, and pretty much the world shut down. RPWL had spent a lot of time preparing for this tour, and decided to film a live studio session for the tour they had planned. In addition to the album, the band also released a Blu-Ray and DVD of the performance, and it is also available on vinyl among other formats. It is common for bands to tour these days and play an entire album or two, and the fans eat it up. Give the people what they want, and apparently RPWL responded, even against the odds.

RPWL do many things very well, the production and sound quality are excellent. Yogi Lang’s vocals are always good, and the backing singers (“Gilmour Girls”) sound amazing. The keyboards create lush atmospheres, and guitarist Kalle Wallner conjures up his Gilmouresque solo’s which are melodies all their own. But, the band is trapped in that slow to mid-tempo feel for every song, and soon you are begging for a little firepower to change the pace. There are some very uplifting moments (especially the guitar solos), but by the time I got to the end of the disc, it just sounded a bit stale and safe.
