Sylvan, Nad: Spiritus Mundi
I think I have found my album for those chilly fall nights sitting by the fire. Nad Sylvan along with guitarist Andrew Laitres have collaborated to create a gorgeous album that is centered around the acoustic guitar and inspired by the works of William Butler Yeats. All the tracks on the album use the poetry/words of Yeats put to gorgeous melodies, using acoustic guitar as the foundation to build these beautiful songs. Sylvan should be familiar to fans as the lead vocalist in Steve Hackett’s live band for a number of years. Having seen him live a number of times, he definitely has a presence on stage, but this album proves it translates to the studio.
Spiritus Mundi in Latin translates to world spirt, and according to Yeats, a universal memory and a muse of sorts that provides inspiration to the poet or writer. After listening a number of times, Sylvan and Laitres have certainly found their muse. It is an album filled with beautiful acoustic guitar (6 & 12 string) that is embellished with lush orchestration, but also has plenty of space and atmosphere. There is a haunting mystique to the music, soft, pastoral, and wonderfully arranged. I am often reminded of early Genesis on tracks such as “The Fisherman” and “A Child Dancing In The Wind”. I would usually pick out a few favorites, but honestly every song here is a gem. . I plan to come back to this album often, there is a magic here that you don’t often find, it is personal, direct, and simply gorgeous.
