Srdjan Ivanovic Blazin’ Quartet: Sleeping Beauty

Jazz drummer Srdjan Ivanovic was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia in 1983 and is now based in Paris, France. He has been involved in many projects as a sideman and has four albums to his credit leading the Blazin’ Quartet, their latest titled Sleeping Beauty, released in March of 2021.

The quartet plays subtle yet intricate jazz and is influenced by the music of his homeland. It is a refined and relaxing listen but still has plenty of creativity oozing through its softer edges. These musicians have a deft touch but when called upon can really bring the heat as in the intriguing “Guchi�, starting in a subtle way and leading into an intricate sound collage where flute, trumpet, and guitar intersect in a variety of ways. The wistful and mellow trumpet in “The Man With The Harmonica�, interesting there is no harmonica in the song, gently sweeps in the background, almost having a surreal and eerie quality. Intricate guitar fills, complex drum patterns and lovely trumpet give the title track a nostalgic feel whereas then opening track “Intro� is a short atmospheric piece setting a serene tone that can be felt through the entire album.

Complex yet atmospheric, creative yet subtle, Sleeping Beauty is a template for thought provoking jazz. Highly recommended.
