Remote: The Gift

Let’s get this out of the way right from the get-go, this is some heavy stuff.

Remote hail from Kaluga, Russia and have been around for over a decade. I believe they have three full length studio albums. This review covers their second disc titled The Gift, released in 2016. It would also appear they have a new album but that will have to wait for another day.

Playing on the album are Evgeny (bass and vocals), Pasha (guitars), and Nikita (drums). This album is pure doom metal, a real sludgefest of distortion and fuzz as this is all about the almighty riff. There is the occasional guitar solo, check out the heavy “Prototrip” for a nine plus minute ride into hell. Evgeny’s vocals add to the intensity, his guttural growling spewing over the distorted riffs. His vocals are harsh throughout the disc and I will admit it would have been nice to hear some clean singing mixed in but he does do the growl thing quite well. For more heaviness try out the slow dirge and distorted atmospheres of “Veisalgia”, the changing tempos and stop/starts in the title track and the thick, hard hitting riffs in the leadoff track “Ouroboros” where the darker background soundscape adds a creepiness factor times ten.

Another heavy album from Russia, just what the doctor ordered. Doom metal fans will certainly get what they pay for. Recommended.
