Skarlett Riot: Invicta

Looking for an aggressive female-fronted metal band that will remind you of, say, In This Moment? Welcome to Invicta -- the third album from the U.K. quartet featuring the band’s namesake, Chloe “Skarlett” Drinkwater, on both clean and harsh vocals. Think Amy Lee meets Sharon den Adel with a drop or two of Angela Gossow.

While Amaranthe gets much of the attention in anthemic modern-metal circles these days (and deservedly so), Skarlett Riot delivers intense yet hook-filled songs well worth the listen. Tracks like “Black Cloud,” “Underwater,” “Stronger” and “Falling” emerge as some of the album's most melodic and memorable, but none of the 11 tracks here wear out their welcome.

Three years in the making, Invicta was born out of multiple lineup changes, a global pandemic and a collective desire to make heavier, darker and faster music without losing sight of the band's commitment to both melody and muscle. Mission accomplished.
