Muth, Danny: Weird Flex

There are a number of ambient artists who I have listened to and enjoyed over the years such as Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Kit Watkins, and Tangerine Dream among others. It is definitely something you have to be in the mood for if you are actively listening. I often will put on this type of music to relax, background music if you will. Many of my friends who are music lovers seem to dismiss it as “New Age” or meditation music, but regardless of your opinion, there are some very interesting artists in this genre.

Weird Flex is the second album by Danny Muth, and he wrote, produced, and played everything you hear on the album. The title track opens the album with a very repetitive motif, and unfortunately this continues throughout the album. The lead guitar tones are harsh to my ears and lack atmosphere. I enjoyed the acoustic guitar “Descensus ad Inferos”, but again it just repeats…and repeats…and repeats. “Green After Green” has a surf vibe from the rhythm guitar, and is quite lively, but suffers the same fate, it fails to keep me interested. Muth would benefit from a collaboration or input from another artist to add variety to the monotonous arrangements. It’s like walking in a circle, the music just does not take me anywhere.
