Blackberry Smoke: You Hear Georgia

After a few listens, I am singing these songs as if I have been listening for weeks. It seems impossible that these guys are still bubbling below the surface; they are more than ready to breakthrough. You Hear Georgia is the bands seventh studio album, and they continue to deliver the goods. Their blend of hard bluesy rock mixed with that southern flair, and don’t forget a dash of country twang for good measure. The band has expanded adding Benji Shanks (guitar) and Preston Holcomb (percussion). However, the addition of Sherie and Sherita Murphy (The BlackBettys) on backing vocals is the real kicker; they sound great, and will be even better live.

The band delivers some great rockers such as the one two punch of “Live it Down” and “You Hear Georgia”. “Hey Delilah” sounds like something out of the Little Feat catalogue, and my favorite track “All Rise Again” features Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers/Govt Mule). Don’t forget about the supped up rocker “All Over The Road”, some great slide guitar and this one moves fast! You get some country flavors in “Ain’t The Same”, and “Lonesome For A Livin’” with Jamey Johnson. Main songwriter Charlie Starr just has a way with a tune, I think this guy is a pure songwriter, and it would not surprise me to eventually hear others doing covers of his songs. A pleasant acoustic number “Old Enough to Know” also has that country touch, it’s a really nice track. Starr hooks up with another Southern Rock legend by way of Mr. Rickey Medlocke (Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd) for the wonderful closer “Old Scarecrow”. I am looking forward to catching these guys on tour this summer with Lynyrd Skynyrd, they are an amazing live band. As for You Hear Georgia, they are incapable of releasing a bad album, this one stands tall amongst an already excellent catalogue. Time to Boogie!!
