Aranita, Aaron: Segunda Vista

Aaron Aranita is a jazz musician who honed his craft in California and Hawaii, studied at the Berklee School of Music and has been a working musician for about thirty years, as both a session man and leader. He is an excellent woodwind player but on his 2017 album titled Segunda Vista, his focus is mainly writing and arranging as he plays on only one track. The album features the Brent Fischer Orchestra, conducted by Fischer who also supplies fretless bass on a couple tracks. The orchestra supplies woodwinds, trumpets, trombones, strings, keyboards, drums and percussion and exudes world class musicianship.

The style is Latin infused big band, and the disc kicks off with “Sea Dreams�, where the band shows off wonderful playing; superb fretless bass, a beautiful trumpet solo and infectious brass all around. “Coracão Da Natureza� has a breezy island feel and in the groove infused “Fischer Sketch�, Alex Budman’s alto sax solo is outstanding. The vibrant feel good shaker “Sierra Leone� features excellent trumpet and sax while “Epifanio� exudes good feelings with every note played. The flugelhorn from Ron Stout and Aranita’s soprano sax particularly stand out.

Really, big band jazz does not get much better than this. For jazz fans this is no brainer.
