Blackhearth: Blackhearth

Here is an album that has been out for a couple of years now. The band is Blackhearth and their self titled debut came out in 2019. The band hail from Spain and consist of Asier Larrea (drums), Alex Hernández (guitar), Endika Ortega (guitar), Alain Concepción (vocals), Jorge Sánchez (bass) and Julio Veiga (keyboards). The band play an atmospheric brand of heavy metal where moody soundscapes morph into heavier riffs and searing guitar solos. For the most part this works pretty well as the contrast between heavy and light serves to keep things fresh and interesting.

The first track “Flying Away” begins with a moody guitar scape before distorted riffs crash and burn slowly with a Sabbath-like intensity. The bass is thick and heavy coinciding with busy drum work as the tempo increases and the band really starts to bring on the heat. The vocals are fairly gruff and might take time to get used to, but the chorus is catchy, and the singer did click with me after a few listens. Another mellow beginning marks “Tarker’s Mills” and again the bass is up-front building with the guitar riffs as they tear and slice like a razor while the vocalist takes on an evil sounding tone. Keyboards are primarily used for colour and texture but are quite effective setting the atmosphere and provide a nice change from the powerful riffs. On “Face The Enemy” the keyboards are more involved trading some excellent solo spots with the lead guitarist. It’s and excellent song and one of my favourites on the disc.

Blackhearth is a solid debut metal album and I for one look forward to hearing more from the band.
