Cannibal Corpse: Violence Unimagined

I’m not sure if anyone thought Cannibal Corpse would last this long. Once the bane of conservative groups and the spark behind some of Jim Carrey’s comedy, the band is now mostly a respected death metal juggernaut. Here’s a band that has actively pushed themselves for over three decades to create some of the of the craziest and most influential music of its kind. And with this album, the band’s fifteenth, they follow up on the acclaimed Red Before Black (2017) with another masterful collection of death metal tunes. Fans will immediately notice that the band’s technical abilities are just as strong, if not stronger, than they ever were. Long-term friend of the band Erik Rutan has now officially joined the band and he brings another layer of technical brilliance to everything. The drumming on this album is also a little more energetic than it was on the last album.

The best thing about Cannibal Corpse is that they actually work hard to write good death metal songs. I know that skeptics would just say that it all sounds the same, but that isn’t right. Here’s a band that works hard to distinguish one song from another and to make it clear that there there’s a big difference between, for example, “Condemnation Contagion” and “Follow the Blood.”

I thought the whole album was terrific, but the best tracks were “Bound and Burned,” “Slowlyu Sawed,” “Overtortured,” and “Cerements of the Flayed.” The latter was an especially strong closer for this album because it’s a little slower and sludgier than everything else. If you listen to it, check out the chuggy rhythm that drives the whole thing. If you like that, stick around for the exchange between the blistering leads and the hard-driving rhythms.

I know that die-hard fans of Cannibal Corpse will debate endlessly about which album is the best, but this masterful new release should definitely get their attention.
