Macre, Joe: Bullet Train

For those who know of American progressive rock band Crack The Sky, you may be familiar with their original bass player Joe Macre. He played with the band from 1975 to 1980 and from 2004 to 2009. His new solo album titled Bullet Train was produced, engineered and mastered by Macre at Joe Mac’s American Garage Studio as well as Studio E, MD and Zen Labs in New Jersey. On the album Macre supplies vocals, bass, synth, and guitars and has help from several musicians including Chris Elliott (lead and rhythm guitars), Al Macre (Hammond B3, keyboards, blues harp, cello, flute, bells), Johnny McKay (drums) and Sam Romagnoli (Hammond B3). Guest vocalists include Vince Guamere, Pete Hewlett, John Palumbo and Gary Chappell.

“You Can’t Take It With You”, “Slow Ryder” and “At The Roadhouse” solidify his love of heavy blues rock, with the latter featuring fabulous slide guitar courtesy of Bobby Hird. The album opening “Drag It Down” exemplifies the band’s prowess for catchy choruses, blistering lead guitar and stand out bass riffs. “Bring On The Night” has a slightly off kilter feel with a quirkier arrangement, interesting guitar riffs and catchy lead vocals and certainly captures the band’s proggier side. “That’s Summer” is another hard driving tune, perfect for summertime listening.

Macre has released a fine rock album with Bullet Train. I just hope the word gets out so music fans can hear it for themselves. Recommended.
