"What's in a name ?" - Shakespeare
Obviously not too much. When I received this copy of Doomtree, I assumed, based on the name, to hear a doom band.Wrong! "Down Below" is a pop/punk hybrid outfit which I'd compare to bands such as The Offspring. These guys probably have the same kind of radio potential as well. The disc's 10 tracks combine for less than 28 minutes of music. None of the tracks are bad, but there's nothing groundbreaking here either. It comes across as a pre-packaged anger which might find an audience with preteens, but doesn't have enough teeth to impress long time fans of heavy music. The band can make some noise, but every track seems interchangeable. Each number seems to come down to 3 minutes of 4/4 backbeat with catchy choruses and cliched riffage.
If you're in the market for very radio-friendly pop-metal then your ship has just arrived. If you think Green Day is the cat's meow, then Doomtree's "Down Below" is a no-brainer for you. However, if you're serious about your metal or punk, you probably won't get too much mileage out of this release.
