Backwood Spirit: Fresh From the Can

I've long been suspicious of 'southern rock' records which aren't actually recorded by persons from the southern states of the good ol' US of A. Backwood Spirit hail from Sweden and I'm not even sure that they're from the upper part of said country! If I were to chose an adjective to describe Fresh From the Can it would be 'rollicking.' The album pretty much rollicks from start to finish other than the Eagles-like "Sweet In The Evening (Lullaby)" which has a certain lullaby quality to it unsurprisingly.

The first three tracks certain rollick in a Black Crowes/early Neal Casal American type of way and are very fine way to pass the time. "Witchwood" displays a harder rocking edge to the band just to mix things up a bit more �" lashings of organ make a pleasing appearance on this one. "Leavin'" has echoes of Free whilst "On Through the Night" oozes soul. "Something About You" gets back to rollicking underscored by some groovy keyboard work and the album is rounded off by "Mayflower" which clocks in at nearly eight minutes and has echoes of Gov't Mule initially before becoming something much more melodic in the chorus. If I had one criticism of the album it would be that the drums appear very high in the mix and at times they obliterate everything else but otherwise this is a fine album for anyone who digs classic rock.
