GOAD: La Belle Dame
La Belle Dame is the latest release from Italian Prog Rock band GOAD who are approaching their 50th year in the business. It’s not often that a band with a 50 year history has never crossed my radar. The music was composed to be an opera dedicated to the ballad written by English poet John Keats. Described as sophisticated, deep and magical, for lovers of dark atmospheric music in the vein of VDGG, King Crimson, Genesis, and Procol Harum. Let’s throw out the comparisons, because this does not come close to the classic bands listed above. If GOAD are trying to be weird for the sake of it, then goal achieved. The production and mix are dreadful, with vocals overpowering the music, nothing feels cohesive. The musicianship is clumsy, as if they were still fumbling around with ideas during the recording. The drums rarely if ever provide any steady foundation, and are amateurish in execution. The keyboards are the only bright spot, but nothing can save what can best be termed a head scratcher, there is too much good music out there to give La Belle Dame repeated listens, once was enough.

GOAD: La Belle Dame

Ho conosciuto GOAD una decina di anni fa - godendo anche di una loro performance live al FIM del 2013 (Albenga) - grazie alla Black Widow Records, ma per la nuova uscita entra in gioco la label My Kingdom Music. Ma andiamo con ordine.
La musica e le creazioni musicali di Rossi non sono mai banali, perché il consolidato e verace sound “prog ‘70” appare funzionale al messaggio, storie del passato che fungono da metafore che favoriscono la riflessione e l’aggancio con l’attualità.
Anche in questo caso il lavoro è sontuoso, ambizioso, complicato, mix tra storia e letteratura con il logico collante musicale, e viene da chiedersi quanta vita Maurilio Rossi abbia dedicato a questo “La Belle Dame”, basato sul poema “La Belle Dame sans Merci”, scritto nel primo ‘800 dal poeta inglese John Keats. Da qui traggono spunto le liriche di Rossi, tranne in un’occasione in cui ricorre alla poesia di E. A. Poe (“The Haunted Place”).
Quali sono i temi trattati in questo progetto, che richiede il doppio LP?
La proposta di GOAD raccoglie in sé simboli e metafore che riportano a temi che toccano l’umanità in toto, come la morte - evento ineluttabile - e il suo legame con l’amore, la solitudine e la desolazione conseguente, il tutto con un’ambientazione in epoca cavalleresca condita dal profumo della mitologia.
Il sunto di questa sofisticata linea di condotta riporta al concetto di fondo di Jonh Keats, sposato in pieno da Rossi: la bellezza è verità e la verità è bellezza.
Sono 14 gli episodi che compongono l’album, tutti rigorosamente in lingua inglese, contraddistinti da una vocalità unica e riconoscibile all’impatto, conditi da trame di Prog versione “Liberty” (termine che ho catturato da Rossi), dove la musica fornisce immagini decorative e ornamentali attraverso un iter costruttivo sintetizzato dall’autore: “Un vero quartetto suona senza sovraincisioni le varie partiture, decise assieme in fase arrangiativa, in poche tracce, poi ovviamente ripulite …”.
Non sezionerò il commento, come spesso accade, perché “La Belle Dame” ha la logica degli album a cui eravamo abituati nei seventies, quelli che interrompevi solo per passare dal lato A al lato B, una storia che va raccontata senza soluzione di continuità e che contiene nel DNA la summa rielaborata di un sound tipico di quei giorni.
Gli intrecci sonori articolati si fondono ad una voce che conduce nei meandri dell’oscurità, disegnando magie e alchimie, producendo persino odori e tanta vita passata.
Chi è alla ricerca della facilità di fruizione dovrà percorrere altre vie, perché il nuovo GOAD richiede concentrazione, ambiente, tempo giusto, magari compagnia adeguata, ma alla fine dell’ascolto - e succede già dopo il primo giro di giostra -, mentre ci si compiace per l’esperienza appena portata termine e si pensa al prossimo avvio, nascono spontanee le riflessioni sulla qualità della musica, in senso generale e, nello specifico, quale sia la valenza culturale espressa dal lavoro di GOAD.
Voglio pensare a un Maurilio Rossi che, nonostante il nutrito e lungo percorso alle spalle, rappresenti il prototipo del sognatore, proprio come uno dei protagonisti del suo album:
C’era una volta un sognatore, era sconosciuto anche a sé stesso,
un alieno in un mondo di alieni era un vero sognatore!

GOAD is an historical Prog Rock band from Florence (Italy) created by Maurilio Rossi in 1974. > 1976-1986 (the early years): For more than a decade the band performed every night at the Space Electronic in Florence where they were noticed by Freddy Mercury (Queen) who presented the band to US managers and for them they recorded in New York the first two releases, a cover album -Who Can It Be- and -To Mars With You- in 1984. In the same year they released the first album -Creatures-. > 1987-2000 (Art Rock): During these years we can describe a second phase of the band characterised by a musical approach made of Progressive and Psychedelic tunes linked to theatrical elements for a kind of music we could define Art Rock. Sons of this period are -Tribute To Edgar Allan Poe- (1994), -Glimpse- (1998), -Streghe- (1998), -Il Minosse- (1999).> 2001-2010 (Atmospheric Prog): A decade of music and releases where GOAD find inspiration in the classic of international literature and where the sound becomes more atmospheric with a great role in the compositions of the keyboards. Released in this period are: -Dark Virgin- (2001), -Raomen - Spoon River Anthology Songs- (2004), -The Wood - Dedicated to HP Lovecraft- (2006), -In The House Of The Dark Shining Dreams- (2007).> 2011-2020 (Dark Progressive): These are the years of the long partnership with Black Widow Records. The different influences from Hard Rock to Progressive, from Gothic to Dark Wave permit to GOAD to realise some of their most mature and complete albums of their career such as -Masquerade- (2011), -The Silent Moonchild- (2015), -Landor- (2018)> Today and tomorrow: The new decade opens with an incredible desire to give new life to a project that is eager to return to appear on the international scene. It is with this in mind that the band signs a new contract with My Kingdom Music which trusts in the new blood that flowed in GOAD´s musical veins and in the new album created entirely by Maurilio Rossi titled -La Belle Dame-, an impressive opera dedicated to the ballad written by the English poet John Keats.The new album will be released on May 7th 2021 via My Kingdom Music and distributed worldwidely.

Musicalmente il sound, rispetto ai lavori del passato, gode di una migliore produzione ed è più cristallino. Troviamo in grande evidenza le sonorità di un pianoforte sontuoso che dona all’insieme un’atmosfera gotica, regale e sinfonica mentre le chitarre hanno un tocco pulito ed efficace. La voce di Maurilio Rossi è particolare e sembra quella di un poeta decadente (strano in questi tempi) che declama versi macabri. L’insieme suona volutamente “vintage” e anni ‘70 e ricorda mitici nomi come Van Der Graaf Generator e Genesis come possiamo ascoltare in tracce come “The Haunted Palace In The Poe’s Land”, “Magic Stairway” e “The Sweetness Of The Pain”, le ultime 2 piccole minisuite molto intense. Il pezzo forte dell’album è a mio avviso la minisuite “To sorrow good morrow” tratta dal citato Endimione, un poema forse ispirato dal “Trionfo di Bacco ed Arianna” di Tiziano Vecellio. La musica ha un inizio pacato ma mantiene una tensione sotterranea oscura e palpabile: la terza e la quarta parte del brano diventano più concitate con le loro atmosfere sinuose e magiche. Nel complesso siamo di fronte ad un grande album che conferma in pieno il valore dei Goad ed anzi mi sembra che il suono sia diventato ancora più raffinato.

FORSE L'ALBUM PIU' BELLO DEI GOAD, TROVO INCREDIBILE QUANTO E' STATO SCRITTO DA QUESTO ANONIMO RECENSORE, EVIDENTEMENTE POCO PREPARATO NEL CAMPO MUSICALE E CERTAMENTE MALEVOLO PER STRANO PRINCIPIO TUTTO E SOLO SUO!
