Bones of the Earth: II. Eternal Meditations of a Deathless Crown

Bones of the Earth has been making music since 2018 and this is their second full-length album. The band has a deep love for medieval fantasy and science fiction and their music weaves together an original story while also working out a complex blend of hardcore, doom, and experimental noise. The band is clearly pushing both their storytelling and their songwriting on this album. Fortunately, it all works pretty well. Albums like this can easily lose their audience if the music tries too hard or if the story just isn’t all that interesting.

On this album, the band continues the story about an ongoing cycle in which things begin with organic life and end with artificial life. The story mostly centers on a prehistoric human, an ancient relic, and what happens when the protagonist loses his humanity, and the machines start to rise. It isn’t a particularly happy story, but it’s an interesting meditation on the ways fortunes change and how so much of life seems to be a conflict between prosperity and ruin or progression and decline.

If you aren’t all that interested in the story but you want to listen to the album anyway, there’s plenty to enjoy here. Bones of the Earth is a solid and crushing hardcore band, and their songwriting is genuinely ambitious and interesting. I suggest checking out “Machine Rising” and “The Empire Never Ended.” Both songs will give you a good taste of what this band sounds like; they may even interest you in an interesting story.
