Desertion Trio: Numbers Maker

Energy and Intensity comes flying out of the speakers on the opening "Albion". Numbers Maker was recorded in front of a live audience at New Haven, CT’s Firehouse 12 studio, and thank god, this is the kind of music that needs and feeds off a live audience. I can picture walking into a club and seeing these guys lighting it up on stage, they will command your attention. So many bands are scripted and play it safe live, so it’s fun to hear a band just go for broke. Cacophony, certainly, and many will put this on and think it’s all noise. But, if you really listen, the band returns to motifs to grab the listener, and then take off again for destinations unknown. To my ears this is a mix of 60’s surf/spy (the guitar sound), punk, Avant- Garde and pure experimentation. Bassist Johnny DeBlase and Drummer Jason Nazary are like a freight train running at full speed, powerfully propelling the music while guitarist Nick Millevoi scrambles across the fretboard to keep up with the frenetic pace, soaking his lines in reverb, whammy bar and wah-wah.

This is not for everyone, and even myself, I definitely need to be in the right mood. But, honestly, this is a lot of fun, and you have to appreciate the attitude and balls they inject into the music.
