Talc: Talc 2

Talc 2 is the sophomore offering from Swiss instrumental trio Talc. The bands bio states their music combines Psychedelic, rock, post-rock and fusion influences. Guitarist/Keyboardist Antonin Wiser is out front for most of this outing, and he is a very capable guitarist. I like Wiser’s use of contrasting clean and dirty tones for his lead and rhythm work. The CD opens with “Ultramarine”, a dark melodic mood reminiscent of Riverside comes to mind. I am immediately struck by the drums which are overly busy for the music, and sit oddly in the mix, a bit too dry for my liking. I find this throughout the CD, you have to know when to lay back and support the song. “Amor Fati” is another example where the drumming overpowers the song, much too busy. My favorite track is “Embuscade”, a great funky bassline, some speedy lead work, and the most memorable melodies on the album. A jazz influence can be heard in “Crimson Hour”, and the acoustic “Cordoba” is a nice change of pace at the midpoint. “Chimere” is dripping of Porcupine Tree influence, and I like the heavy driving pace of this one to close out the CD. I hear good ideas, but they just don’t seem to take off enough to make a lasting impression.

These guys have talent, but I think more focused compositions and a better mix would go a long way moving these guys forward.
