Talc: Talc 2

Talc 2 is the sophomore offering from Swiss instrumental trio Talc. The bands bio states their music combines Psychedelic, rock, post-rock and fusion influences. Guitarist/Keyboardist Antonin Wiser is out front for most of this outing, and he is a very capable guitarist. I like Wiser’s use of contrasting clean and dirty tones for his lead and rhythm work. The CD opens with “Ultramarine�, a dark melodic mood reminiscent of Riverside comes to mind. I am immediately struck by the drums which are overly busy for the music, and sit oddly in the mix, a bit too dry for my liking. I find this throughout the CD, you have to know when to lay back and support the song. “Amor Fati� is another example where the drumming overpowers the song, much too busy. My favorite track is “Embuscade�, a great funky bassline, some speedy lead work, and the most memorable melodies on the album. A jazz influence can be heard in “Crimson Hour�, and the acoustic “Cordoba� is a nice change of pace at the midpoint. “Chimere� is dripping of Porcupine Tree influence, and I like the heavy driving pace of this one to close out the CD. I hear good ideas, but they just don’t seem to take off enough to make a lasting impression.

These guys have talent, but I think more focused compositions and a better mix would go a long way moving these guys forward.
