Hierarchy: Hierarchy

Some media take so long to develop that they fall into what people call development hell. Although the term development hell is mostly associated with movies, I’m going to apply it to this album because it took 15 years to make. The band formed all the way back in 2002, but they went on hiatus in 2010 and then started things back up in 2018. Although I don’t know anything more about the band’s history, I can say that they went through several lineup changes over the years and that the band is now ready to get their music out there.

The music on this album is consistently heavy and rarely subtle. I don’t mean that negatively. Hierarchy is a straightforward melodic blackened death metal band that fans of Deicide, Behemoth, Dark Funeral, and Amon Amarth should enjoy. The music and the lyrics are focused largely on the dark themes of hell and the devil. My favorite track was “Through the Fires ov Moloch” because the drumbeats established a different mood than the other tracks. The drums go on just long enough to build anticipation before things really take off. I also enjoyed “Legion” because of its hard driving riff and because the guitars were simultaneously soaring and crunchy. The vocals also had a slightly edgier quality that I enjoyed. If you want to hear a slightly freakier vocal sound, check out the demonic-sounding voice lurking in parts of “Light ov the Morning Star.”

If you like those tracks, you’ll probably like the whole album. This band isn’t trying to reinvent melodic blackened death metal. Instead, they just want to make the music they want to hear and to play it well. I’ll be interested to hear what the future holds for these guys. Hopefully, their next album won’t take fifteen years to come out!
