Unchained: Unchained

Melody meets power on the self-titled debut from Sweden's Unchained. With dual guitars, a rhythm section that doesn't bludgeon itself, strategic use of keyboards and a singer named Per Karlsson who can make himself sound like two different people - opener "My Guide" and second song "The Analyst" don't even sound like the same band - Unchained possesses the key ingredients to concoct a European metal album that will rise above the fray. In addition to plenty of scorchers, Unchained also offers a ballad, "I Dream," which sounds completely out of sync with the rest of the record but stands as one of its strongest tunes. Some songs - the solid head-banger "Like the Candle" and the rousing and catchy "Ghost of the Alchemic Hall," for example - go back a few years, to when Unchained was composing for compilations and demos. If the band could write songs this strong during its early years, just imagine how potent Unchained's next album could be ...
