Matt Smith’s World: Live…at the Saxon Pub

In this review we will continue our foray into the music of Matt Smith, this time focusing on his six member project Matt Smith’s World and the album Live…at the Saxon Pub, recorded in Austin, Texas. Like his three piece, the band had a weekly stint (this time at the Saxon Pub) and this album was recorded during one of those performances. The full band line-up is:

Matt Smith (lead vocals, guitars, mandolin)
David Webb (keys, vocals)
Mark Epstein (bass, vocals)
Aaron Lack (steel pan, percussion, vocals)
Joe Morales (sax, vocals)
Ernie Durawa (drums)

Unlike the pure blues presented by Matt Smith’s Chop Shop, here the music is in the poppier side of rock with flavourings of R&B and jazz. And like his other band, the musicianship, melodies and craftsmanship are in a word, excellent. The disc begins with the feel good pop rock/R&B of “Struggle On” with its upbeat groove and delicious saxophone. The piano, sax and guitar solos are superb. The bass is huge in the catchy “Walk The Talk” and the vocals a little deeper with a bubbly organ and more infectious saxophone work. “Simple Song” is more old school rock and roll, reminding me a little of Bob Seger. “Dance With Me” has a calypso thing going on with the melody reminding me of Santana’s Supernatural album whereas “Jazzhaus” has a laid back jazz rock vibe with the melodic guitar work and organ that is truly memorable.

Another fine live album from Matt Smith and cohorts, brimming with energetic performances coming straight from the heart and soul. A well earned four stars.
