Booth, Dede: The Expansion Effect

Multi-Instrumentalist Dede Booth tackles the daunting task of writing, arranging, recording and producing her latest release The Expansion Effect. The creation of the album served as a way to mindfully cope with uncertainty, risk, and adapting to find new ways of connection. I’m sure we have all looked for ways to detach from reality during the pandemic, and music for many of us was one of our outlets. Unfortunately, the CD suffers from poor production, and a lackluster delivery making it a difficult listen. As a musician and writer myself, I understand the time, effort, and heart that an artist puts into their work. That being said, there is a reason why most musicians have producers and collaborators, as their valuable input is needed for perspective, guidance, and push us to be our best. The music takes minimalist approach, leaning to atmospheric; and the vocals are more of a drone than singing. The phrase “It’s not you, it’s me” best sums up my feelings listening to The Expansion Effect. I cannot connect with this on any level, so maybe it is me?
