Mommyheads, The: Soundtrack to the World’s End

If you have read my recent review of New York based pop band The Mommyheads disc titled Future You, you will know I am quite impressed by this rather eclectic pop outfit. This is a review of their 2018 release titled Soundtrack to the World’s End. While the title may sound a glum, the music is not as dour as one might think, and I would never refer to this as depressive. This band is intelligent, both musically and lyrically, and I am sure they include a fair amount of tongue in cheek style in their song writing.

This is another fine album beginning with “Don’t Believe the Pilot” and its slow picked guitar line, detailed arrangement, and superb lead and backing vocals. The music can be sparse or with a fuller sound, and it never loses its tasty melody. “Phantom Limb” sounds a little like XTC, take that as a huge complement, with some fine keyboards and acoustic guitar. Just an excellent track. “Glimpsing” is another excellent tune, with quirky pace changes and stellar keyboards supporting the melody. With the catchy “Crooked Picture” I hear a bit of 10cc and City Boy, so that should tell you something right there. The uplifting guitar rhythms in “Home on the Moon” and the lovely “Antidote for the Ascent of Humanity” are further examples of near perfect pop confections, with a little progginess to keep it all highly interesting.

What can I say? The Mommyheads released another stellar effort with Soundtrack to the World’s End. It’s almost criminal this band isn’t a household name. Highly recommended.
