Hughes, Gary: Decades

Outside of his job as the main voice of British melodic rockers TEN, Gary Hughes was also heavily involved in Bob Catley's first three solo albums, all of which are unfeasibly good, both as a producer and songwriter. He also produced Hugo's solo debut, Vinny Burns' solo record, and more recently worked with the band Serpentine. It's a busy time for the man as he's recently unleashed his excellent new solo album Waterside, and there's this, a collection of his 'greatest hits' from his long solo career.

Hughes' solo material is mostly much less grandiose than his work in Ten. He's a very talented songsmith. In fact I have long been surprised that he's never penned a hit record. He's pretty versatile. Mostly he writes none-too-heavy melodic rock which gets the toes tapping. Prime examples would be "Seducer", "Veritas", and "Divided We Fall". He can also get surprisingly bluesy as on "Heart Of A Woman". This collection has many (too many) ballads as uncle Gary is a dab hand at writing them but overall this is a fair overview of an underrated British talent.
