Midnight Callers, The: Red Letter Glow

I have heard some decent pop records lately but perhaps the best of the bunch is Red Letter Glow, the debut album from New York based band The Midnight Callers. The albums title refers to New York City at night, how the lights shimmer and glow.

Talk about a feel good album. To say this is uplifting music is an understatement, and it couldn’t have come at a better time, as you know, the pandemic has turned many people’s lives upside down. Perhaps this album signifies there is light at the end of the tunnel after all and that optimistic mood can be heard almost immediately in the first track “41 Miles To Roscoe” where jangly guitar and catchy lead vocals create a superb melody that will surely tickle your brain. This one will be ideal for that summer road trip. The upbeat power pop of “Down On Luck” is another earworm, in particular the vocal harmonies. For an old school ‘70s flavour listen to “Return The Favor”, another rocking tune with some ripping guitar adding the fire. A little feedback adds a distinctive touch and the vocal arrangement is absolutely head sticking. Cheap Trick comes to mind in the ear worm pop of “I Need You” while the jangly guitar and psychedelic undertones in “River Rise” have a Beatlesque quality. This one boasts excellent guitar throughout and is my favourite track on the disc.

Red Letter Glow is infectious, intelligent, and an all around excellent power pop album that I found to be highly addictive. The Midnight Callers are a promising band to be sure and Red Letter Glow would turn more than a few heads if given the chance.

A Jem Records release.
