Rezet: Truth In Between

German metallers Rezet are a new name to me, but not a new band, this being their fifth album. I guess you would describe them as a thrash metal band, although there are other elements at play here - in opener “Back For No Good” we get, along with chugging riffs, the squealing guitars and booming sonics of classic eighties hard rock whilst some of the gang vocals towards the end are on the AC/DC side of things. There’s a bit of a melo-death feel (redolent of noughties-era Kreator) in “Deceived By Paradise”; “Renegade” sounds like NWOBHM crossed with the Sex Pistol’s “Pretty Vacant” (musically if not vocally!), whilst “Jailpit” is one of a number of songs to have something of a greased-up, garage rock feel. Guitarist Ricky Wagner’s slightly hoarse vocals fit the songs quite well, albeit they are a bit one-dimensional. The main criticisms here are the muddy guitar sound which stops some of the songs really cutting through; a bit of an uneven feel, as if the band haven’t really decided what their core sound is, and the long running time - some of the songs, particularly in the last third, don’t have that much to offer and could have been cut to make a more concise album. All in all though, quite an enjoyable listen that those in to the more melodic, less technical side of classic thrash might be interested in checking out.
