Dangerous Times for the Dead: Queen of the Night

Danish newcomers Dangerous Times for the Dead are another band you can file into the currently flourishing "New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal". I'm certainly not complaining, because I absolutely adore the old school, direct, and commercially accessible sound that tends to come with the moniker. The more poppy choruses and harmonized guitars, the better.

Sounding like a beefed-up Scandinavian Scorpions, DTftD bring to us their latest in a flurry of singles, "Queen of the Night". Ripped straight out of the 80's, it's an arena rocker with all the greatest hits of the genre that you all know and love. It's got a a soaring, clean vocal performance. It's got harmonized guitar solos and pentatonic bass runs. And of course, it has a catchy as hell earworm chorus. I mean, what's not to like. Not much; the best I can come up with is that vocalist Bjorn Ciggaar sometimes sounds like he has a few marbles in his mouth when using his lower register during the verses. Not a deal breaker by any means, and during the chorus he sounds fantastic so the guy can clearly bring the goods.

Queen of the Night is an excellent single, and one that conjures memories of driving at night, screaming past neon lights and men and women alike with teased hair a mile high as they are headed out for a night of metal and booze. Considering I was born in '84 and literally have no recollection of any of this to begin with, that's a great accomplishment. Give me a full album of songs like this one, and I'll be pumping my fist all night long.
