Reuter, Markus: Sun Trance

German musician Markus Reuter sure has had his hands full lately releasing an excellent solo album titled Truce, followed by his performance with the Mannheimer Schlagwerk (an eleven piece ensemble) on May 23, 2017 at Alte Feuerwache, Mannheim, Germany. The touch guitar innovator shows his abundant talent with this ground breaking performance.

Sun Trance is one thirty-eight minute piece beginning with a repeating melody on the vibraphone. It is a very slow build that requires some patience on behalf of the listener. This is all about slow builds and subtlety, a very moody and atmospheric sound design. Eventually Reuter adds his touch guitar, which is incredibly textural, creating an almost surreal sound at times.

This is not an album to multitask to as you will easily miss the nuance and free flowing creativity at work here. No, this one needs your full attention to fully appreciate. For those who dig mellower sounds and are gravitated towards the avant-garde, this will likely be worth exploring.
